The Choquequirao Trek is one of the most impressive and challenging adventures in Peru, offering travelers the opportunity to discover the “Sacred Sister of Machu Picchu.” Hidden deep in the Apurímac Canyon, Choquequirao is a vast Inca archaeological complex surrounded by mountains, lush vegetation, and breathtaking landscapes. Unlike the heavily visited Machu Picchu, Choquequirao remains a peaceful and less crowded destination, allowing visitors to explore its terraces, temples, and ceremonial spaces in a truly authentic atmosphere.
This 4-day / 3-night trek combines physical challenge, cultural exploration, and natural beauty, making it ideal for adventurous travelers who want to immerse themselves in Peru’s history while enjoying a unique off-the-beaten-path experience.

Itinerary

What you will do and explore with us

Day 1
Day 1: Cusco – Capuliyoc – Chiquisca
  • Your adventure begins early in the morning with a scenic drive from Cusco through picturesque Andean valleys and traditional villages, gradually ascending towards the trailhead at Capuliyoc. From this point, the immensity of the Apurímac Canyon unfolds before your eyes, offering panoramic views of one of the deepest canyons in South America, framed by towering mountains and snow-capped peaks that dominate the horizon.
  • The trek begins with a gentle descent along winding paths that reveal the dramatic geography of the region. As you walk, the landscapes constantly shift—from high Andean terrain to more temperate zones—creating a vivid tapestry of ecosystems. Along the way, you may spot native flora and fauna, as well as herds of mules and locals who use these trails as part of their daily lives.
  • A well-deserved break allows you to enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by nature, recharging your energy while overlooking the vast canyon. The fresh mountain air and the sound of the Apurímac River far below create the perfect setting to pause and take in the beauty of the journey.
  • In the afternoon, the descent continues until reaching the community of Chiquisca, a welcoming campsite nestled in a warm valley with lush vegetation. Here, you will be greeted with a hearty dinner prepared by the trekking team, followed by a restful night under the stars. The first day sets the tone for the adventure ahead—challenging yet deeply rewarding, with unforgettable scenery from start to finish.
Day 2
Day 2: Chiquisca – Marampata – Choquequirao
  • The day begins with an early start as you leave Chiquisca behind and descend further into the canyon, heading towards the banks of the powerful Apurímac River. Crossing the suspension bridge, you can feel the energy of this mighty river, whose waters carve deep into the earth and give life to the surrounding valleys.
  • From this point, the most demanding section of the trek begins: a steady and challenging ascent that gradually takes you out of the canyon. The trail winds up the steep mountainside, offering a dramatic change in scenery—from arid slopes dotted with cacti to greener landscapes as you climb higher. Along the way, breathtaking views of the canyon and its sheer cliffs serve as both a challenge and an inspiration.
  • By midday, you arrive at Marampata, a small community perched on the mountainside. Here, a well-earned lunch awaits, accompanied by panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. It is the perfect place to rest, regain strength, and appreciate the magnitude of the natural world around you.
  • In the afternoon, the trek continues along gentler terrain, surrounded by lush vegetation, until reaching the campsite located near the archaeological complex of Choquequirao. The anticipation builds as you approach the “sister city of Machu Picchu,” hidden among the mountains and accessible only to those willing to make the journey.
  • The day concludes with a delicious dinner prepared by the trekking team, followed by an overnight stay at the campsite. As night falls over the Andes, the silence of the mountains and the brilliance of the starry sky create a magical atmosphere, preparing you for the unforgettable exploration of Choquequirao on the following day.
Day 3
Day 3: Full Day Exploring Choquequirao
  • Morning – Guided tour of Choquequirao Archaeological Complex, visiting main plazas, terraces, temples, and the unique llama terraces.
  • Afternoon – Free time to explore or rest while enjoying the serenity of this hidden Inca city.
  • Evening – Dinner and second overnight at campsite near Choquequirao.
Day 4
Day 4: Choquequirao – Capuliyoc – Cusco
  • The final day of your adventure begins with an early departure from the campsite, retracing the trail that winds through the spectacular Apurímac Canyon. As the sun rises over the mountains, the path gradually reveals familiar landscapes from a new perspective, offering fresh appreciation for the dramatic cliffs, winding river, and sheer scale of the canyon.
  • The trek challenges your endurance one last time with a series of ascents and descents, but every step is rewarded by the breathtaking views that accompany the journey. Along the way, you will pass through diverse ecosystems once more, transitioning from lush vegetation to arid slopes, before finally reaching the highlands near Capuliyoc.
  • By afternoon, you arrive at the trailhead where your transport awaits. A well-deserved rest marks the end of the trekking portion of your journey, as you take a final look at the vast canyon that has been your companion over the past days.
  • The return drive to Cusco allows time to reflect on the experience: the challenge of the trails, the beauty of the landscapes, and the wonder of exploring one of the last great Inca cities hidden in the Andes. By evening, you arrive back in Cusco and are dropped off at your hotel, carrying with you unforgettable memories of Choquequirao—an adventure of effort, discovery, and reward.
