Itinerary
What you will do and explore with us
Your adventure begins with a morning or afternoon pick-up from your hotel in Cusco, followed by a scenic drive through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo train station. From here, you will board the train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu.
During the train ride, sit back and enjoy one of the most spectacular railway journeys in the world. The route follows the Urubamba River, winding between majestic mountains, fertile valleys, and lush subtropical vegetation. Along the way, you will witness the gradual transition from high Andean landscapes to the cloud forest that surrounds the lost citadel of the Incas.
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will be warmly received and escorted to your hotel for check-in. The rest of the day is free for you to relax or explore at your own pace. You may choose to stroll through the charming town, visit the local artisan markets, or soak in the natural hot springs, a perfect way to unwind before your Machu Picchu experience.
In the evening, you can enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants offering both Peruvian and international cuisine. Prepare yourself for the highlight of your journey, as tomorrow you will visit the magnificent Machu Picchu.
Overnight stay in Aguas Calientes.
- After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will board the shuttle bus that winds its way up the steep mountain roads to Machu Picchu (approximately 25 minutes). As you ascend, the anticipation grows until the moment you arrive at the entrance to the Lost Citadel of the Incas, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
- Upon entering the sanctuary, you will begin a comprehensive guided tour (2–3 hours) of the main archaeological sectors. Your expert guide will bring the history of Machu Picchu to life as you explore its sacred temples, agricultural terraces, ceremonial plazas, and the enigmatic Intihuatana stone. Learn about the spiritual significance of this citadel, its architectural genius, and the mysteries that still surround it today.
- After the guided visit, you will have free time to explore on your own. You may choose to wander through the site at a leisurely pace, take in the panoramic views, or embark on one of the optional hikes (with prior booking):
-
- Huayna Picchu Mountain – a challenging ascent with breathtaking views of Machu Picchu from above.
- Machu Picchu Mountain – a longer but less steep hike that offers sweeping vistas of the surrounding valleys and snowcapped peaks.
-
- In the afternoon, descend by bus to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time for lunch or a final stroll through the village. Later, board the train for the scenic journey back to Ollantaytambo, retracing the landscapes of the Sacred Valley.
