The Machu Picchu by Car Tour is the ideal alternative for adventurous travelers who want to experience a more authentic and economical route to the legendary Inca citadel. Instead of following the standard train journey, this option combines a scenic road trip across the Andes with a trek along the final stretch of the route, offering a perfect blend of landscapes, adventure, and discovery.

The journey begins with a drive through dramatic Andean scenery—passing high mountain passes, fertile valleys, and charming traditional villages. Along the way, you will witness breathtaking contrasts: snow-capped peaks glistening under the sun and lush subtropical forests unfolding as you descend into the jungle region. The road leads to the hydroelectric station, the starting point of an unforgettable walk.

From here, you will set off on a 3-hour trek following the railway tracks that wind through the verdant cloud forest, accompanied by the sound of rivers and birdsong. This immersive hike allows you to gradually approach Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu, in a way that feels both adventurous and rewarding. Upon arrival, you will check into your accommodation, enjoy dinner, and rest before the highlight of your journey.

The next morning, you will rise early to visit Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and explore its temples, terraces, and mysteries with the guidance of an expert.

This tour is a fantastic choice for adventurers, budget-conscious travelers, and nature lovers who want to discover diverse landscapes and embrace the spirit of exploration before reaching Peru’s most iconic destination.

Itinerary

What you will do and explore with us

Day 1
Day 1: Cusco – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes
  • Your adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Cusco, as you set out on a scenic drive towards the Sacred Valley. The journey takes you across one of the most impressive landscapes of the Peruvian Andes. Passing through Abra Málaga (4,316 m / 14,160 ft), you will be rewarded with spectacular views of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and high-altitude valleys, creating unforgettable photo opportunities.
  • As the road continues, the scenery changes dramatically—from the cold and rugged Andes to the warm, lush cloud forest. Along the way, there will be a stop at a local restaurant for lunch, where you can enjoy regional dishes and take a well-deserved break before continuing the journey.
  • By the afternoon, you will reach Hidroeléctrica, the starting point of the trekking portion. From here, the adventure becomes even more immersive as you begin a 3-hour hike along the railway tracks. Surrounded by dense jungle, waterfalls, and the sound of tropical birds, this easy but scenic walk introduces you to the unique environment of the high jungle.
  • Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, you will check into your hotel. The evening is free for you to stroll through the town, visit the local market, or relax in the natural hot springs—the perfect way to rest before the big day ahead.

Overnight stay in Aguas Calientes.

Day 2
Day 2: Machu Picchu – Cusco
  • The day begins early with breakfast at your hotel in Aguas Calientes, fueling you for one of the most memorable experiences of your journey. From town, you can either take the short bus ride (approx. 25 minutes) or embark on a scenic uphill hike to the entrance of Machu Picchu.
  • Upon arrival, you will enter the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Accompanied by your professional guide, you’ll enjoy a 2–3 hour guided exploration of its most important sectors: the Temple of the Sun, the Main Plaza, the Intihuatana stone, the Temple of the Condor, and the impressive agricultural terraces that frame the site. Your guide will share the fascinating history, legends, and mysteries that make Machu Picchu such a unique cultural treasure.
  • After the tour, you’ll have free time to explore at your own pace. This is the perfect opportunity to capture stunning photos, wander through hidden corners, or, for those who have secured permits in advance, hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, both of which offer spectacular panoramic views of the citadel and the surrounding Andes.
  • By midday, you will descend back to Aguas Calientes where you can enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (not included) and prepare for the return journey. In the afternoon, the adventure continues with a 3-hour trek along the railway tracks back to Hidroeléctrica, retracing the scenic route through lush vegetation and river valleys.
  • From Hidroeléctrica, private transportation will be waiting to take you on the final stretch back to Cusco. As night falls, you will arrive in the city, tired but filled with the unforgettable memories of having experienced Machu Picchu in a more adventurous and authentic way.
