Itinerary
What you will do and explore with us
- 05:30 hrs – Pick-up from your hotel
Your adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. We set out on a scenic drive through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, passing traditional Andean villages and fertile farmlands. Along the way, we’ll make short stops for last-minute supplies or to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains before continuing towards Km 82, the official starting point of the Inca Trail. - 08:30 hrs – Start of the trek
Upon arrival at Km 82, we’ll meet our trekking team and pass through the trail checkpoint. The trek begins with a gentle walk along the banks of the Urubamba River, where the air is fresh, and the snow-capped peak of Veronica Mountain dominates the horizon. The first stretch offers an introduction to the unique ecosystems of the Andes, with lush vegetation, wildflowers, and the distant sounds of birds echoing in the valleys. - Midday – Visit Llactapata
Our first major highlight is the archaeological site of Llactapata, an ancient Inca settlement known for its agricultural terraces and impressive layout. Your guide will share the history and significance of this site, giving you insight into the Inca’s sophisticated farming techniques and strategic use of the landscape. After exploring, we continue our ascent through the valley, following winding paths surrounded by native flora. - 17:00 hrs – Arrival at campsite
By late afternoon, we arrive at Wayllabamba, our first campsite, located in a peaceful highland valley. The trekking crew will have our tents set up and a warm dinner prepared. As night falls, the sky transforms into a breathtaking canvas of stars, offering the perfect backdrop for a restful night before the next day’s challenge.
- 06:00 hrs – Breakfast
Wake up to the crisp morning air of the Andes and enjoy a hearty breakfast prepared by our trekking team. Today is considered the most physically demanding day of the Inca Trail, so we take time to fuel up with energy-rich Andean ingredients before beginning the ascent. - Morning – Ascent to Warmiwañusca Pass (4,215 m)
We start the day’s hike with a steady climb through an enchanting polylepis forest, where twisted trees and moss-covered branches create an almost magical atmosphere. As we gain altitude, the vegetation becomes sparser, replaced by high-altitude grasses and rugged landscapes. The climb to Warmiwañusca, famously known as Dead Woman’s Pass, is the highest point of the trek at 4,215 meters above sea level.
The ascent is challenging, but every step rewards you with increasingly breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Upon reaching the summit, you are greeted with an expansive panorama of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and the winding path you have conquered. It’s a perfect moment for photos and quiet reflection before beginning the descent. - Afternoon – Descent to Pacaymayo
From the pass, we begin a long but scenic descent into the Pacaymayo Valley. The trail zigzags down stone steps, with occasional rest stops offering views of distant waterfalls and the wild beauty of the high Andes. Upon arrival at our campsite in Pacaymayo, we are welcomed by the trekking team and treated to a warm dinner. The valley’s serene setting, surrounded by towering peaks, makes it an ideal place to rest and recover after this rewarding but demanding day.
- 06:00 hrs – Breakfast
We wake up surrounded by the peaceful ambiance of the Pacaymayo Valley, with the sound of running water and the crisp mountain air energizing us for another incredible day. After a nourishing breakfast, we begin what many trekkers consider the most beautiful section of the Inca Trail, filled with fascinating archaeological sites, diverse ecosystems, and stunning landscapes. - Morning – Runkurakay Pass & Archaeological Sites
Our first ascent of the day takes us to the Runkurakay Pass (3,950 m). Along the way, we visit the semi-circular Inca structure of Runkurakay, believed to have served as a lookout post or resting place for messengers. From the top of the pass, the views extend across rolling green mountains and distant snow-capped peaks.
Descending from the pass, the trail leads us to Sayacmarca, a mysterious complex of terraces, narrow passageways, and ceremonial areas perched on a steep cliff. Its name, meaning “Inaccessible Town,” is fitting, as it seems to float above the surrounding landscape. - Midday – Phuyupatamarca “Town in the Clouds”
We continue to Phuyupatamarca, one of the most well-preserved Inca sites on the trail, aptly named “Town in the Clouds” for its position above the misty valleys. Here, intricate stonework, ceremonial baths, and panoramic terraces invite us to imagine the life of the Inca people who once inhabited this sacred place. - Afternoon – Arrival at Wiñay Wayna
The trail descends gradually into a lush, subtropical environment filled with orchids, bromeliads, and hummingbirds. By late afternoon, we reach Wiñay Wayna, a spectacular terraced site clinging to the mountainside. Its name, meaning “Forever Young,” refers to the abundance of orchids that bloom here year-round.
After exploring the site and admiring its cascading agricultural terraces and water channels, we settle at a nearby campsite for our final night on the trail. As the sun sets, we enjoy a farewell dinner with our trekking team, reflecting on the unforgettable journey and anticipating our arrival at Machu Picchu the following morning.
- 04:30 hrs – Early Breakfast
We wake up before dawn for our final and most anticipated day. After a light but energizing breakfast, we begin a short, enchanting hike along a narrow trail carved into the mountainside, surrounded by mist and the soft sounds of the awakening forest. - Hike to Intipunku (Sun Gate)
After about 1.5 hours, we reach Intipunku, the famous Sun Gate—the ancient entrance to Machu Picchu used by Inca pilgrims. From here, the first rays of sunlight illuminate the stone walls of the citadel below, creating a breathtaking panorama. This moment is often described as the highlight of the trek, a reward for the days of effort and dedication. - Morning – Guided Tour of Machu Picchu
Descending from the Sun Gate, we enter the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu, where our professional guide leads us through its most important sectors. We visit the Temple of the Sun, the Main Plaza, the Intihuatana (Sun Stone), the Temple of the Three Windows, agricultural terraces, and ceremonial fountains. As we explore, we learn about the site’s history, architectural genius, and spiritual significance within the Inca civilization. - Optional Hikes
For those who have booked in advance, this is also the perfect time to ascend Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, both offering unparalleled panoramic views and unique perspectives of the ruins. - Afternoon – Return to Cusco
After the guided visit and some free time to explore on your own or take photographs, we board the shuttle bus down to Aguas Calientes. Here, you can enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (not included) before boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo. From there, a private transfer will bring you to Cusco, where we arrive in the evening. - Evening – End of the Tour
We conclude our journey at your hotel, carrying with us the unforgettable memories, stunning landscapes, and spiritual energy of the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.
