The South Valley of Cusco, also known as the “Cradle of the Andean Civilization”, is a journey through history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. Unlike the Sacred Valley, this route is less visited, offering a more authentic experience. Here you will discover Inca, pre-Inca, and colonial legacies in one trip, traveling through traditional Andean towns and unique archaeological sites.

Highlights of the South Valley include the majestic Tipón terraces and water channels, the mysterious Pikillaqta pre-Inca citadel, and the Andahuaylillas Church, often called the “Sistine Chapel of the Andes” for its stunning baroque art. Along the way, enjoy beautiful valleys, lagoons, and mountain scenery. This excursion is ideal for travelers who love history, culture, and want to explore beyond the classic Cusco circuits.

Itinerary

What you will do and explore with us

Day 1
South Valley of Cusco
  • 8:30 a.m. – Pick-up from Hotel
Your day begins with a comfortable pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. Accompanied by a professional guide, you will head toward the South Valley, a route filled with archaeological, historical, and cultural treasures that reveal the diversity of civilizations that once flourished in this region.
  • 9:00 a.m. – Tipón
The first stop is Tipón, an extraordinary example of Inca engineering. This archaeological site is famous for its perfectly designed agricultural terraces and hydraulic system, which continues to function even today. As you walk through its channels, fountains, and cultivation platforms, your guide will explain how water held both practical and sacred significance for the Incas. Surrounded by the beauty of the mountains, Tipón is a perfect blend of architecture, nature, and spirituality.
  • 10:30 a.m. – Pikillaqta
Continue to Pikillaqta, a vast citadel that belonged to the Wari culture, a powerful pre-Inca civilization that thrived between 600 and 1000 A.D. The site features more than 700 stone and adobe structures, including plazas, streets, and ceremonial areas that demonstrate an advanced level of urban planning. Walking among its remains provides a unique opportunity to connect with one of the most influential cultures in Andean history, long before the rise of the Inca Empire.
  • 12:00 p.m. – Andahuaylillas Church
The journey continues to the small town of Andahuaylillas, home to one of Peru’s greatest colonial treasures: the Church of San Pedro de Andahuaylillas. Known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Andes”, this church is adorned with stunning murals, golden altars, finely carved woodwork, and baroque paintings. Inside, you will feel the blending of indigenous and Spanish traditions, reflected in a sacred space that preserves centuries of history and devotion.
  • 1:30 p.m. – Return to Cusco
After exploring these remarkable sites, the return journey to Cusco begins. Along the way, you will enjoy panoramic views of the Andean landscapes, picturesque valleys, and traditional villages.
