After approximately 3.5 hours, you will arrive at Tinqui (3,900 m / 12,795 ft), a small highland town and the official starting point of the Ausangate trek.
- From here, the trail gradually ascends through open landscapes dotted with herds of llamas and alpacas, with the majestic Ausangate Mountain towering in the distance. The crisp Andean air and wide horizons create a sense of both peace and anticipation as you move deeper into the highlands.
- By late afternoon, you will reach Upis (4,400 m / 14,435 ft), located right at the base of the sacred Ausangate. This will be your campsite for the night, offering one of the most spectacular views of the snow-capped peak. Nearby, you will also find the Upis hot springs, where you may relax your muscles after the first day’s hike while gazing at the dramatic mountain scenery.
- Dinner will be served at camp, prepared by the trekking team with local ingredients to give you a nourishing and authentic Andean meal. The evening is free to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the mountains before resting for the night in your tent, surrounded by the silence of the Andes.
- After an energizing breakfast at camp, the journey continues along high-altitude trails framed by the immense Ausangate massif. The landscape is dotted with grazing alpacas and llamas, their presence adding charm and authenticity to the experience. As you ascend, the crisp mountain air and panoramic views remind you that you are walking through one of the most sacred regions of the Andes.

From this vantage point, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of rugged peaks, glacial valleys, and the endless expanse of the Vilcanota range. After taking in the views and catching your breath, you’ll begin a descent toward a region famous for its high-Andean lakes.
