Itinerary

What you will do and explore with us

Day 1
Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake
  • 05:00 hrs – Pick-up from your hotel
We begin our adventure with an early morning departure from your hotel in Cusco, heading northwest on a scenic drive through the Andean highlands. The journey offers breathtaking views of fertile valleys, snow-capped peaks, and traditional villages. After a brief stop in the charming town of Mollepata to enjoy breakfast (not included) and make any last-minute preparations, we continue our drive to Soraypampa (3,900 m / 12,795 ft), the official starting point of our trek.
  • Morning – Hike to Humantay Lake
From Soraypampa, we embark on an uphill hike of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the stunning Humantay Lake (4,200 m / 13,779 ft). This glacial lagoon is renowned for its striking turquoise waters and dramatic location at the base of Humantay Mountain, whose snow-covered summit reflects beautifully on the lake’s surface. Here, your guide will explain the cultural and spiritual significance of the site, and you will have ample time to take photographs, meditate, or simply admire the scenery.
  • Afternoon – Return to Soraypampa & Camp
We descend back to Soraypampa in time for a delicious lunch prepared by our trekking team. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax and take in the spectacular mountain views, including the majestic Salkantay Peak rising in the distance. As evening falls, we enjoy a freshly prepared dinner before settling into our comfortable campsite. Spending the night in Soraypampa allows for a unique opportunity to gaze at the brilliant Andean night sky, far away from city lights, surrounded by the silence of nature.
Day 2
Day 2: Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Chaullay
  • Early morning – Ascent to Salkantay Pass
After an energizing breakfast in Soraypampa, we set out on what is considered the most demanding yet rewarding day of the trek. The trail begins with a steady ascent through rugged mountain terrain, surrounded by sweeping views of glaciers and towering peaks. As we climb, the crisp Andean air becomes thinner, and the sense of accomplishment grows with every step.
  • After approximately 3 to 4 hours of uphill trekking, we reach the Salkantay Pass (4,650 m / 15,255 ft) — the highest point of the entire route. Here, we are rewarded with awe-inspiring panoramic views of Salkantay Mountain (6,271 m / 20,574 ft), one of the most sacred peaks in Inca cosmology, as well as neighboring mountains such as Humantay and Tucarhuay. Your guide will share the cultural and spiritual importance of the pass, and you’ll have time for photos and a brief rest before beginning the descent.
  • Afternoon – Descent to Chaullay
From the pass, the trail begins a long and scenic descent. We witness the dramatic transformation of the landscape as we leave the high alpine zone and gradually enter the lush cloud forest. The air becomes warmer and more humid, and the terrain changes to green valleys with abundant flora and cascading streams. Along the way, we enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by nature.
  • The descent continues until we reach Chaullay (2,900 m / 9,514 ft), a small settlement at the edge of the cloud forest. Here, we set up camp, enjoy a hearty dinner, and relax after a day filled with physical challenge and spectacular scenery. The sounds of the forest will accompany us as we rest for the night.
Day 3
Day 3: Chaullay – La Playa (Lucmabamba)
  • Morning – Trek through lush valleys
After an energizing breakfast at our campsite in Chaullay, we begin our trek through a completely different environment from the previous days. The route takes us deep into the Santa Teresa Valley, where the climate is warm and tropical, and the vegetation is lush and vibrant. The trail follows the course of the Salkantay River, whose rushing waters accompany us for much of the journey.
  • As we descend, we pass through small rural communities and fertile farmlands where locals cultivate coffee, bananas, avocados, passion fruit, and coca leaves. Your guide will share insights into the agricultural traditions of the region, and there may be opportunities to taste freshly harvested fruit or learn about the artisanal coffee-making process.
  • Wild orchids, colorful butterflies, and the calls of exotic birds create a serene atmosphere, making this section of the trek both relaxing and captivating.
  • Afternoon – Optional hot springs visit
By midday, we arrive at La Playa (Lucmabamba), our campsite for the night. This charming settlement is surrounded by green hills and coffee plantations, offering a tranquil setting to rest.
  • In the afternoon, there is an optional excursion to nearby hot springs, where you can soak in naturally heated mineral waters while enjoying views of the surrounding mountains. This is the perfect way to soothe sore muscles after days of trekking.
  • Later, we return to camp for a freshly prepared dinner. The night in Lucmabamba offers a peaceful rest, with warm weather and the gentle sounds of nature as your lullaby.
Day 4
Day 4: La Playa – Llactapata – Aguas Calientes
  • Morning – Hike to Llactapata
After an early breakfast in Lucmabamba, we begin our ascent along a well-preserved Inca trail, passing through coffee plantations and cloud forest vegetation. The climb is gradual yet steady, offering spectacular views of the lush mountains and deep valleys below. Along the way, your guide will point out native flora and fauna, as well as explain the significance of the route in Inca times.
  • After approximately three hours of hiking, we reach the archaeological site of Llactapata, a fascinating Inca complex strategically located on a ridge directly across from Machu Picchu. From here, we are rewarded with a rare and breathtaking perspective of the Inca citadel, framed by the surrounding mountains. This viewpoint provides a unique opportunity to appreciate Machu Picchu from a distance, away from the crowds, and to capture incredible photographs.
  • We take time to explore the site, learn about its history, and enjoy a well-deserved rest before beginning our descent.
  • Afternoon – Descent to Hydroelectric and onward to Aguas Calientes
From Llactapata, we descend through lush vegetation toward the Hydroelectric Station, following a trail that offers glimpses of waterfalls and local wildlife. Upon arrival, we enjoy lunch (not included) before starting the final stretch of the trek.
  • The route from Hydroelectric to Aguas Calientes follows the railway tracks, winding through the valley with the Urubamba River on one side and steep cliffs on the other. This flat walk takes approximately three hours and allows for relaxed conversation and reflection on the incredible journey so far.
  • By late afternoon, we arrive in Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Here, we check in to our hotel and have time to rest or explore the small town, perhaps visiting local markets or relaxing in a café.
  • Dinner is served at a local restaurant, and the night is spent in a comfortable hotel, preparing for the much-anticipated visit to Machu Picchu the following day.
Day 5
Day 5: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
  • Early Morning – Bus to Machu Picchu
After an early breakfast at the hotel, we board one of the first buses from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, ensuring we arrive in time to witness the citadel bathed in the soft golden light of dawn. The 25-minute ride winds up a series of switchback roads, offering glimpses of the lush forest and the mighty Urubamba River far below.
  • Upon arrival, we pass through the entrance and step into one of the world’s most iconic archaeological wonders. Your professional guide will lead you through an in-depth exploration of Machu Picchu, visiting its most significant sectors: the Temple of the Sun, the Main Plaza, the Sacred Rock, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Intihuatana stone, and its many terraces ingeniously built into the mountainside. As you walk along these ancient paths, you will learn about the history, architecture, and spiritual importance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • You’ll have time to take photographs from panoramic viewpoints and absorb the mystical atmosphere of the site. For those with extra energy and prior reservations, optional short hikes such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain can be arranged, offering even more spectacular views.
  • Midday – Final moments in Machu Picchu
Before departing, you’ll have free time to explore on your own or simply sit and reflect on the extraordinary journey that brought you here.
  • Afternoon – Return to Cusco
We descend by bus to Aguas Calientes, where you can enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (not included) or shop for souvenirs. In the afternoon, we board the train to Ollantaytambo, enjoying the scenic ride through the Sacred Valley, where mountains and rivers accompany us all the way.
  • Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, a private vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco, arriving in the evening. This marks the end of your unforgettable Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, filled with incredible landscapes, cultural heritage, and memories that will last a lifetime.
